Fortinet Consolidates and Improves Security at Indiana University

Indiana University, a multi‑campus public system serving over 110,000 students, faced growing strain on its data centers as virtualization, video and research traffic increased. Existing security appliances had become a bandwidth and latency bottleneck, management was complex (dozens of rule changes weekly across many devices), and the university needed strong IPv6 support, multi‑tenant isolation and high‑availability for its campus and research networks.

After a proof of concept, IU deployed Fortinet (FortiGate and FortiManager). Fortinet’s custom ASICs and VDOM architecture delivered multi‑gigabit, low‑latency throughput for both IPv4 and IPv6 while centralized “single‑pane” management simplified policy changes and tenant separation. The result was noticeably higher bandwidth and network performance, reduced management time and lower total cost of ownership.
