Finnish Retail Chain Increases Resilience of 470 Convenience Stores With SD-WAN

R-kioski is a Finnish convenience store chain with about 470 outlets that has expanded from newsagents into a wide range of retail and electronic services. The business became increasingly dependent on its network to support POS, payments and digital services, but its legacy MPLS links suffered frequent outages from harsh weather and created high costs and reliability risks across franchise stores.

R-kioski replaced MPLS with Fortinet’s Secure SD-Branch and FortiGate Secure SD‑WAN, combining broadband and dual 4G links from two mobile operators and integrating FortiSwitch, FortiAP, FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer for converged security and networking. The new design doubled link redundancy without raising communications costs, improved resilience and visibility, enabled granular traffic segmentation and threat protection, and cut in-house service desk cases by 30–40%.
