Ecuadorian University Securely Connects Its Sites and Optimizes Its Network With Fortinet Secure SD-WAN

La Universidad Regional Autónoma de los Andes (UNIANDES) is a leading Ecuadorian university with seven campuses and roughly 12,000 students. Rapid growth exposed serious cybersecurity gaps—remote sites were largely unprotected, incidents and malware threatened the main campus and online payment services, and the existing WAN connectivity degraded, prompting the need for a more secure, reliable network architecture.

UNIANDES deployed Fortinet Secure SD-WAN with FortiGate NGFWs at each site and centralized tools (FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer) plus FortiMail and FortiWeb for email and web‑application protection. The rollout delivered centralized management, faster policy deployment, higher performance, continuous connectivity, rapid enablement of teleworking, reduced operational overhead (two staff now oversee all sites), and improved protection for online payments and web services.
