Creating an Ultra-Fast, Low-Latency Video Delivery Infrastructure for (Exciting) Services

Yahoo Japan Corporation, operator of Yahoo! JAPAN and the GYAO! free video service, faced rapidly rising access from smart devices and a need to deliver more high‑definition content reliably. The challenge was to renew its CDN and network to handle about 1 million requests per second and 800 Gbps per data center while ensuring high availability, 40GbE integration, loss‑free logging, and a compact, energy‑efficient security footprint.

To meet those requirements Yahoo Japan deployed Fortinet FortiGate 3700D firewalls (five sets / 10 units per data center) using 40GbE and 10GbE interfaces as the core security layer. Since going live in May 2015 the infrastructure has delivered the expected performance and stability, handled traffic spikes without increased system usage, enabled reliable, loss‑free log collection, and offers the scalability to support continued growth.
