Bringing Enterprise-Class Wireless to a Hospital Where the Staff and the Mission Increasingly Depend on Connectivity

Mater Health Services North Queensland, a private hospital group in Townsville, faced growing wireless demand as staff and medical devices increasingly relied on connectivity. Its legacy access points couldn’t support multiple SSIDs, high device density, or Eduroam access for the hospital’s joint Education Unit, and the hospital needed a solution that avoided interference with sensitive medical equipment.

Fortinet deployed an enterprise WLAN (controller, 51 access points, Fortinet Network Manager and SA200) that delivers pervasive coverage, single‑channel operation, and seamless mobility. The new network supports up to 100 simultaneous Education Unit connections (with one AP replacing eight–nine older units), provides uninterrupted service for medical devices, minimizes interference, and simplifies troubleshooting—enabling pilots of iPad workflows and future RTLS deployments.
