At Utah Valley University, Network Access Control Makes Byod Fast, Simple, And Reliable

Utah Valley University (UVU), Utah’s second-largest higher-education institution with nearly 33,000 students and 5,000 faculty, faced rapidly growing demand for BYOD access that its legacy network access control (NAC) couldn’t handle. The old system caused frequent access and security problems and a surge in Help Desk calls, so the university needed an easy, scalable way to onboard thousands of personal devices without disrupting campus life.

UVU deployed Fortinet’s NAC to automate device onboarding and policy enforcement: users download an agent, devices are scanned for OS/antivirus compliance, and compliant devices get instant network access. Within ten days 5,500 users had registered 6,600 devices (growing to 20,000 users and 30,000 devices in two months), Help Desk calls and walk-ins were cut by half, and the university gained faster, more reliable BYOD support plus new opportunities to integrate mobile technology across campus.
