Bolivian Power Distribution Company Upgrades IT and OT Networks to Improve Service for 1 Million People

Distribuidora de Electricidad La Paz (DELAPAZ) is the sole power distributor for Bolivia’s La Paz region, serving urban and rural customers and planning to expand service to about 1 million people. The company faced outdated networking equipment, limited traffic visibility, frequent cyberthreats, costly legacy links and radio infrastructure, and a small IT staff struggling with manual, device-by-device management that caused extended outages and slow response times.

DELAPAZ deployed an integrated Fortinet platform—FortiGate NGFWs and Rugged NGFWs, Secure SD‑WAN, FortiAnalyzer and FortiManager, FortiSwitch, FortiAP and FortiAuthenticator—plus FortiCare services to centralize security and connectivity across 81 locations. The rollout delivered full visibility and remote control of IT and OT networks, eliminated monthly remote failures, cut rural communication downtime from ~8 hours to seconds, enabled LTE redundancy, and reduced connectivity costs by over 95% (replacing MPLS), while lowering fines and improving operational response.
