Case Study: Snam achieves secure, high-performance SD‑WAN and lower operating costs with Fortinet

A Fortinet Case Study

Preview of the Snam Case Study

Leading Italian Energy System Operator Boosts Efficiency with Secure SD-WAN

Snam, a leading Italian natural gas transport and storage operator with a network spanning 41,000 km and more than 100 branch and industrial sites, needed a secure, centrally managed network to support a major digitalization and sustainability program. Its legacy mix of managed services and an in‑house MPLS lacked centralized visibility and caused high latency, raising performance, operational and NIS2 compliance concerns as the company moved toward cloud, edge and AI-enabled services.

Snam deployed Fortinet Secure SD‑WAN—FortiGate NGFWs with UTP offloaded to SPUs, FortiExtender LTE backups, and centralized FortiManager/FortiAnalyzer management—supported by FortiCare and FortiGuard services. The rollout (completed in under 2.5 months) delivered faster, more reliable connectivity across 130 sites, improved user satisfaction and security visibility, reduced operating and communications costs, and created a secure foundation for its digital transformation and regulatory compliance.
