Indiana University Effectively Manages Staff Workloads Streamlines Budget Negotiation

Indiana University Simon Cancer Center (IU Simon Cancer Center) needed a better way to measure the staff effort involved in opening and managing clinical trials, as well as to improve workload planning and sponsor budget negotiations. Working with Forte, the center looked for a data-driven way to understand how much time different roles spent on trial activities and whether staffing and budgeting were aligned with actual demand.

Forte provided the OnCore Enterprise Research system’s effort tracking functionality, which let IU Simon Cancer Center log activity by stage, category, task, protocol, and staff member. The solution replaced rough estimates with hard data, showed that nurses were spending significant time on administrative tasks, justified adding a part-time administrative assistant, and strengthened startup-cost negotiations with sponsors by giving the center reportable evidence of the hours required for industry-sponsored trials.
