Atrium Health Puts Patients First with OnCore, EMR Integration

Atrium Health, a large healthcare system with more than 900 locations and over 11 million annual patient encounters, needed a better way to identify clinical trial subjects across its network and make trial status visible during emergency care. Working with Forte and its OnCore platform, the health system sought seamless integration with its Cerner EMR so that patients on trials could be flagged quickly and accurately, even when they could not recall trial details.

Forte implemented a two-phase OnCore-to-Cerner integration, first synchronizing protocol data and then automating subject status feeds through OnCore’s RPE interface using IHE standards. The result was real-time EMR alerts, banner-bar notifications, prescriber pop-ups, and daily digests to research staff, reducing manual work and improving AE/SAE follow-up. Atrium Health reported immediate patient-safety improvements, including a case where emergency staff were instantly alerted to a subject’s trial status, helping avoid drug interactions and protocol deviations.
