ForeScout Helps Maryland County Identify and Remediate Security Risks While Improving Asset Management and Compliance

Prince George’s County, Maryland — home to more than 900,000 residents and roughly 8,000 employees across 300 buildings — needed better control of its county-wide network that supports about 20,000 endpoints, guests and IoT devices (thermostats, medical refrigerators, vehicle laptops, RFID-tagged court documents, etc.). The Office of Internet Technology lacked visibility into the growing mix of authorized, unauthorized and agentless devices, struggled to quickly identify and remediate noncompliant or vulnerable endpoints, and wanted to reduce redundant assets and meet federal compliance requirements.

The county deployed the ForeScout platform (See, Control, Orchestrate) with Enterprise Manager and modules for Splunk and VMware AirWatch to gain central, agentless visibility and automate remediation. ForeScout revealed the true device inventory, identified and blocked risky devices (e.g., XP machines, unmanaged Raspberry Pi units), accelerated incident response and help-desk workflows, enabled quarantine and automated updates, and improved asset management and compliance reporting — driving operational efficiencies and estimated annual savings of about $798,898.
