A Fontech Case Study

Preview of the SoftBank Case Study

Softbank’s WiFi offloading strategy saves millions on mobile network investments

SoftBank, one of Asia’s largest telecom and internet companies, saw mobile data demand surge after winning exclusive distribution rights to the iPhone 4S. The resulting subscriber growth put heavy pressure on its 3G network, creating a need to expand connectivity quickly while keeping network investment costs under control. Fontech provided the WiFi offloading solution used to address this challenge.

Fontech implemented a scalable WiFi offloading platform using cost-efficient routers and pre-integrated Fon hotspots, enabling seamless login and automatic WiFi connectivity at home and on the go. The results were significant: SoftBank deployed more than 1 million hotspots, offloaded 50% of customer traffic to WiFi, and shifted over 4 petabytes of data per month, saving millions in mobile network investment while improving customer experience and helping SoftBank become a leading iPhone seller in Japan.
