How WSU Uses FM:Systems Higher Education Survey to Conduct Space Surveys that Optimize Workplace Management and Satisfy F&A Audits

Wayne State University, a large urban research university managing more than 130 buildings and 12 million sq. ft., faced an outdated facility management system that created data silos, slow vendor support, and reliance on spreadsheets. The Planning and Space Management team struggled to run timely space surveys, maintain accurate room and asset data, and efficiently support Facilities & Administrative (F&A) audits, with maintenance sometimes working from decade-old drawings.

WSU selected FM:Systems’ cloud-based FMS:Workplace and Higher Education Survey to centralize drawings, space, asset and occupancy data and enable faster reporting. Implementation continued through COVID-19, with rapid data import and improved vendor responsiveness. As a result, WSU can perform more frequent, fully auditable space surveys (planning 100% annual audits with phased field verification), speed F&A audits, gain better cost and occupancy visibility, and optimize space and real estate decisions.
