The University of Newcastle, a research-led institution with over 39,000 students including 5,242 international students, faced growing pains with an aging international payments solution that left finance staff reconciling payments and processing refunds manually. To improve the payer experience and back‑office efficiency, the university turned to Flywire as its international payments provider and payment portal.
Flywire was implemented for cross‑border tuition payments (initially alongside the legacy provider and adopted as the sole provider in October 2022), enabling students from 50 countries to pay in over 240 currencies with local methods, real‑time status updates and 24/7 local‑language support. The Flywire portal’s self‑service, integrated reconciliation and streamlined refund workflows saved the university hundreds of staff hours, reduced merchant and bank fees by tens of thousands of dollars annually, and freed finance teams to focus on strategic projects.
