How Munson Healthcare transformed their patient engagement

Munson Healthcare, which operates nine hospitals across northern Michigan, faced rising patient pay balances from high‑deductible plans, growing credit‑card use that increased PCI exposure and compliance costs, and expensive, time‑consuming collection vendors. In March 2015 Munson moved from loan financing and day‑60 early‑out to Flywire’s segmented payment plan program to address manual CSR workflows, high financing fees, long payment terms and elevated default rates.

Flywire implemented automated segmented payment plans, Day‑1 early‑out integration and enterprise payment processing with PCI‑validated P2PE/tokenization (via Flywire’s partner Bluefin) to simplify enrollment and secure card data. The Flywire solution drove a 46% collection rate for qualified patients, 65% patient self‑activation of plans, a 58% reduction in average plan length (to 10 months), a 38% drop in defaults, 26% fewer early‑out placements, a 12% improvement in patient pay, about $1M in annual spending eliminated and more than $300K saved in network segmentation costs.
