VCTO Labs maps Alcatraz in 3 weeks with Flyability

VCTO Labs, a company specializing in drone mapping and digitization for historical and cultural research, faced the challenge of creating a complete digital twin of Alcatraz Island. The project required accessing hazardous and confined spaces that had been sealed for decades, which posed significant safety risks to personnel. To overcome this, they partnered with vendor Flyability and utilized its Elios 3 drone.

The Flyability Elios 3 was deployed to safely enter and collect LiDAR data from previously inaccessible areas like an old powerhouse, a civil war-era dungeon, and underground cisterns. This solution provided the team with clear visuals and precise 3D mapping data without any safety risk. The results are being compiled into a wider digital model of Alcatraz, which will be used for effective park management, maintenance planning, and protecting the site from climate change and high tourist footfall.
