Refratechnik Cement creates digital twins in under 10 minutes with Flyability

Refratechnik Cement, an international cement company, faced the challenge of creating a highly accurate digital twin of a new cement plant to establish a baseline for tracking future changes and defects. They needed a fast method to collect LiDAR data inside large, confined assets like cyclones and calciners, which was not feasible with slow handheld scanners. They engaged vendor Flyability and its partner InspecDrone to utilize the Elios 3 drone for this task.

The solution implemented by Flyability involved using the Elios 3 drone equipped with a LiDAR sensor to fly inside the plant's assets and quickly collect survey-grade data. This data was processed to create precise digital twins of the entire plant interior. The results were achieved in a fraction of the time a handheld scan would take, with the drone capturing enough data for three cyclones in under ten minutes. The impact provides the plant operator with a permanent record of the original condition, enabling intelligent maintenance by comparing future scans to this baseline to identify defects and plan cleaning schedules.
