LKAB turns 8-hour ore pass inspections into 20-minute flights with Flyability

LKAB, a major mining company operating one of the world's largest underground iron ore mines, faced a significant challenge in inspecting its 40 ore passes. These critical, hazardous shafts required inspections that were slow, taking eight hours, and provided incomplete data using traditional methods. To address this, LKAB partnered with vendor Flyability and implemented its Elios 3 drone for inspections.

The solution implemented by Flyability used the Elios 3 drone equipped with a Surveying LiDAR to capture visual and precise mapping data. This transformed the inspection process, reducing the time required from eight hours to just 20 minutes for a single pilot. The results included significant cost savings from reduced downtime, the elimination of safety risks for personnel, and the collection of much more accurate and detailed data than was previously possible.
