Case Study: Idaho Environmental Coalition achieves detailed 3D vault mapping with Flyability Elios 3

A Flyability Case Study

Preview of the Idaho Environmental Coalition (iec) Case Study

Idaho Environmental Coalition maps an underground vault in 7 minutes with Flyability

The Idaho Environmental Coalition (IEC), under contract with the Department of Energy (DOE), faced the challenge of planning the extraction of highly radioactive nuclear waste from 1960s-era underground storage vaults. They needed a detailed 3D map of a vault's interior to plan safe drilling locations, but initial attempts using a handheld LiDAR sensor lowered on a tripod resulted in incomplete data. After exhaustive research into various methods, the IEC selected Flyability and its Elios 3 drone to perform the mission.

Flyability's Elios 3 drone successfully entered the vault and collected all the necessary LiDAR data in its first seven-minute flight, with a second flight for additional data. This provided a high-quality, detailed 3D map that was crucial for nuclear waste extraction planning. The solution represented the culmination of over a year of research and preparation for the IEC, allowing them to proceed safely with their project. Flyability's tool was determined to be the best for the job, enabling crucial access and performing reliably despite harsh environmental conditions.
