ICL Boulby halves survey flight time with Flyability

ICL Boulby, the world's only polyhalite mine, faced the challenge of accurately mapping its vast and complex network of historic and current underground tunnels to meet statutory requirements and avoid safety risks like gas or water inrushes. Flyability tested its new Elios 3 Surveying Payload at the mine to enhance this crucial data collection process.

The solution implemented by Flyability was the Elios 3 equipped with its new Surveying Payload, which features an upgraded Ouster Rev 7 LiDAR sensor. This new payload allowed surveyors to complete scans with five times less drift and twice the data coverage. The results were significant, as flight times for surveying a 340-meter tunnel were cut in half from 20 minutes to just 10 minutes, drastically reducing post-processing time and enabling new use cases like water drain planning.
