Canton Valais reopens tunnel in 2024 with Flyability

The Canton Valais authorities faced a significant challenge when a landslide caused a road tunnel in the Swiss Alps to collapse, cutting off access to a village and a ski resort. Due to the instability of the site, it was impossible to safely send investigators inside to assess the damage and determine a cause. They turned to Flyability and used its Elios 3 drone with a Surveying Payload to conduct a remote investigation.

Flyability's solution allowed investigators to safely fly the Elios 3 drone into the collapsed tunnel to simultaneously capture visual data and LiDAR scans. This provided critical situational awareness and a clear 3D visualization of the damage, revealing the structural cause of the collapse. The fast response enabled repair work to begin quickly, and the tunnel was reopened by June of the same year, minimizing disruption to local traffic ahead of the summer season.
