Trust Waikato’s Holistic Approach to Grantmaking Security with Fluxx

Trust Waikato is a perpetual community trust in New Zealand that distributes roughly NZ$15.9M annually and supports about 1,900 active grantees. Faced with rising cyberattacks and a user base of over 4,000 accounts, the trust needed to strengthen data protection and verify that authorized individuals were signing grant applications—without creating barriers for community partners.

Working with Fluxx, Trust Waikato rolled out Multi‑Factor Authentication with a thoughtful, user-centered plan: timed launch during a quiet season, staff trained with the same materials as grantees, short guides and videos, and data-led outreach to incomplete registrations. The result was stronger authentication, clearer signer identity, a cleanup from 4,000+ accounts to 1,900 verified users, reduced support after an initial spike, and increased trust and convenience reported by grantees.
