Twistnet Communications saves 4 man days and £2,000 with Fluke Networks

Twistnet Communications Ltd, a UK-based telecommunications specialist, faced a significant challenge while certifying fiber optic cabling for a new North Sea wind farm. The high-voltage environment of the onshore electrical substation posed a safety risk, and having their own technicians certified to work there would have cost £500 per person and taken a full day of induction per technician. For a project requiring bidirectional testing of over 400 links, this process was time-intensive and costly. Twistnet turned to vendor Fluke Networks and its OptiFiber Pro OTDR product with SmartLoop technology to find a solution.

The solution from Fluke Networks allowed a pre-certified wind farm technician, rather than a Twistnet employee, to perform one end of the bidirectional test using a loopback lead. Communicating via walkie-talkie, Twistnet technicians guided the on-site worker through the process. This use of the SmartLoop feature saved an estimated four man-days and over £2,000 on this single project. Furthermore, Twistnet's Managing Director stated that the efficiency gained with Fluke Networks' technology has been a key factor in helping them win approximately 20 new contracts.
