Twistnet Communications Ltd, a UK-based fiber-optic installation and testing specialist, was contracted to bidirectionally certify about 400 links for a North Sea wind farm. The work required access inside a high-voltage onshore substation, where strict health-and-safety inductions (costly and time-consuming) and severe electrical risks made traditional on-site testing difficult and expensive.

Using the SmartLoop feature of the Fluke Networks OptiFiber Pro OTDR, Twistnet trained a wind-farm technician to install loopback leads while their own technicians controlled tests remotely via walkie-talkie. This approach improved safety, cut about four man-days and more than £2,000 in onsite costs, reduced testing time, and helped Twistnet win roughly 20 additional contracts.
