A Fluke Networks Case Study
Nipissing University, a primarily undergraduate institution in North Bay, Ontario, supports over 4,500 students and 300+ staff across three campuses and 530 access points. As BYOD and smart-device use exploded, IT struggled with unpredictable AP traffic, interference and competing channel use (compounded by a neighboring college network), rogue devices, potential attacks and PCI compliance — all while needing to preserve limited wireless bandwidth for research and education.
The university deployed Fluke Networks’ AirMagnet Enterprise (WIPS/WIDS) to provide 24x7 monitoring, integrated spectrum analysis and automated alerts. The system gave IT full visibility into devices, channels and traffic, sped troubleshooting, proactively detected and tracked rogue or malicious activity, simplified PCI reporting, improved channel planning and delivered more reliable connectivity for classrooms, residences and device-driven initiatives.
