A Fluence Case Study
Southern California Edison faced the challenge of procuring fast-ramping, flexible peaking capacity to replace retired generation facilities and meet the Los Angeles area's steep evening energy demand, all while adhering to transmission constraints and maximizing renewable energy utilization. The utility selected Fluence's Advancion energy storage platform as a cost-effective and clean alternative to traditional gas peaking plants.
Fluence implemented a 100 MW lithium-ion energy storage system at the Alamitos Energy Center. This solution provides four hours of on-demand peak power and grid-stabilizing services, is dispatchable within seconds, and has a small physical footprint suitable for the dense urban area. The project, one of the world's largest of its kind, is designed to enhance grid stability and provide peaking capacity through at least 2040, affirming the long-term economic benefits of energy storage.
