Emergency Flood Response in Republic of the Congo

World Food Programme in the Republic of the Congo needed a better way to monitor and respond to severe flooding after a 2017 disaster exposed major gaps in water gauges, rainfall records, and timely information for authorities. Floodbase provided its Flood Intelligence Platform to help WFP and the government detect floods faster and improve country-wide flood monitoring and analytics.

Using Floodbase’s near real-time flood data, historical risk maps, alerts, and impact analytics, WFP was able to relocate 7,000 at-risk refugees, redirect aid to 250,000 people, and secure $12.5 million in emergency funding. Floodbase also supported ongoing recovery with crop damage assessments, helping WFP and the government respond earlier, better target relief, and strengthen their emergency fundraising and response efforts.
