BCG uses Floodbase data to model up to an 18% flood-area increase across sub-Saharan Africa

Boston Consulting Group (bcg), in partnership with the Malaria Atlas Project, needed to understand how climate-driven flooding would impact the future malaria burden across sub-Saharan Africa to guide eradication investment. To conduct the first quantitative analysis of this issue, they required a detailed historical flood dataset for the entire region, which Floodbase provided.

Floodbase supplied BCG with a historical catalog of flood data covering over two decades and eight million square miles of sub-Saharan Africa. This data enabled researchers to project a future 18% increase in flood area days and determine that flooding will drive 92% of the projected malaria mortality increase. The analysis found that early eradication efforts funded now could be up to 55% less expensive than future suppression efforts, providing a critical, data-driven case for immediate action.
