How the University of Texas Medical Branch predicted an effective relocation for 185 patients

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) needed to safely and efficiently relocate 185 patients from an existing hospital to a new adjacent building more than 1,200 feet away. To prepare for the move, UTMB worked with FlexSim Software using FlexSim HC to model the relocation and anticipate staffing needs, delays, and bottlenecks before the actual event.

FlexSim Software helped UTMB build a 3D discrete-event simulation of the patient move, allowing the team to test scenarios and determine the best staffing plan. The simulation identified five move teams as optimal and predicted the move could finish within a narrow time window; the real relocation was completed in 6 hours and 35 minutes, slightly ahead of the modeled range, saving time for 15-25 move staff and other hospital personnel.
