UAB Hospital’s The Kirklin Clinic needed to find the best location for patient triage in an ambulatory setting and reduce delays during check-in and intake. To evaluate the options, the hospital worked with FlexSim Software using simulation and creative analysis to compare four possible triage scenarios.

FlexSim Software helped the team model and assess converting office space into triage with one or two stations, triage in an exam room before physician examination, and using an existing exam room as dedicated triage. The analysis led to recommendations that eliminated several non-value-added activities and reduced average check-in time by 46%, from 4.8 minutes to 2.6 minutes, while also lowering overall patient length of stay.
