How Skarnes, Inc. validated an impactful system change using simulation

Skarnes, Inc., a material handling systems integrator in Plymouth, MN, needed to improve the throughput of a client’s warehousing process using an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) connected to a conveyor loop. To validate a proposed system change, Skarnes worked with FlexSim Software to create a 3D simulation model of the AS/RS and conveyor layout and assess whether reducing congestion would increase pallet flow.

FlexSim Software built the simulation and tested the addition of an upper mainline conveyor for outbound pallets. The model showed that pallet picks could increase from 70 to 100 per hour, a 43% throughput improvement, while also visually confirming that conveyor congestion would be greatly reduced.
