Preview of the MD Anderson Cancer Center Case Study

How MD Anderson saved two clinical spaces in a new Proton Therapy Center and laid a base for future improvements

MD Anderson Cancer Center, a leading cancer treatment facility in Houston, faced a space and capacity challenge as it planned an expansion of its Proton Therapy Center. The center needed to understand how the existing building and the new addition would work together, especially given that proton treatment can only be delivered to one room at a time. To analyze current and future needs, MD Anderson used FlexSim Software’s FlexSim Healthcare simulation product.

FlexSim Software helped MD Anderson build a detailed computer model using CAD layouts, patient flow data, staffing schedules, and clinical logic to test capacity and layout scenarios. The simulation showed that only four new clinical rooms were needed instead of six, saving tens of thousands of dollars in construction costs and freeing up additional space for other uses. The model also confirmed there would be enough room to keep consults and follow-ups in the current building and created a base for future scenario testing, such as alternate patient splits and inter-building connections.
