How Baptist Health South Florida decreased Door to Provider time by 46%, optimized Staffing, and reduced Length of Stay

Baptist Health South Florida, a Miami-based health system, needed a better way to manage rising emergency department volumes while reducing patient wait times, improving throughput, and optimizing staffing. To test potential changes safely, the organization used FlexSim Software’s FlexSim HC to build an accurate computer model of its ED and evaluate multiple “what if” scenarios.

Using FlexSim Software’s simulation model, Baptist Health South Florida tested a Rapid Care Unit (RCU), a physician-in-triage Rapid Evaluation (REV) process, and different staffing plans. The results showed an 8% reduction in Door to Provider time and a 27% reduction in length of stay for lower-acuity patients with RCU, plus a 46% decrease in Door to Provider time with REV; the model also helped identify optimal nurse and physician staffing levels, leading Baptist Health to implement RCU permanently, begin REV rollout, and add ED staff.
