Microsoft Tracks Clean Power Hourly with Flexidao

Microsoft, aiming to operate on 100% renewable energy, faced the challenge of moving from annual clean energy accounting to providing hourly evidence that its power consumption was matched by zero-carbon energy purchases. This was essential for meeting its ambitious 100/100/0 goal. To establish a baseline, certify hourly matches, and report audit-ready emissions, Microsoft partnered with vendor Flexidao and its clean energy intelligence platform.

Flexidao's solution matched the data center's hourly consumption with energy from an offshore wind power purchase agreement. The platform computed an hour-level coverage score, issued granular energy certificates to prevent double counting, and aggregated guarantees of origin for reporting. As a result, Microsoft can now monitor and improve its hourly clean power coverage, report precise hourly emissions in line with the GHG Protocol, and assemble the necessary documentation for annual Scope 2 reporting.
