Case Study: U.S. Department of Energy achieves proactive cybersecurity and automated IT asset management with Flexera

A Flexera Case Study

Preview of the U.S. Department of Energy Case Study

Combating hackers with a bulletproof data solution for this federal agency

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), a large federal agency with over 100,000 employees and contractors and an IT estate spanning more than 4,000 software products and versions, needed to automate IT Asset Management to quickly identify outdated software and hardware that create cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Manual data calls and spreadsheets produced incomplete, untimely and inaccurate asset information, leaving the agency unable to assess end-of-life exposure, prioritize risk, or make timely remediation decisions across a complex, dynamic environment.

DOE implemented an automated solution by integrating Flexera Technopedia and Normalize with Planview Troux into a central DOE EARS system to aggregate, cleanse and normalize asset data, enrich it with non-discoverable market metadata, and deliver dashboards and reports to executives, security and IT teams. The approach enabled proactive, fact-based risk assessments, improved transparency and accountability, streamlined prioritization of high-risk legacy systems, and became a key driver for the agency’s cybersecurity program—earning external recognition for innovation.
