Customer Q Prime needed a thinner, lighter and more thermally efficient LED lighting solution to meet automakers’ demands for energy-efficient, stylish lighting that fits complex shapes while reducing cost. Flex was engaged to apply its flexible circuit and material science expertise to redesign LED circuitry for improved heat dissipation, manufacturability and ROI.
Flex developed the Q-Prime circuit: a thin composite structure with a proprietary thermally conductive adhesive and copper on one side/aluminum on the other to disperse heat faster, plus aluminum that is 90% thinner than previous solutions. Flex’s roll-to-roll processed design lowers component operating temperatures, significantly reduces weight, cuts costs by eliminating tooling, and provides the flexibility and shape retention automakers require.
