Case Study: USound achieves mass-production scale for MEMS speakers with Flex

A Flex Case Study

Preview of the USound Case Study

How a new audio company successfully partnered to transform the audio experience for the world

USound, an Austrian start-up founded in 2012, developed a MEMS-based miniaturized speaker to deliver immersive 3D audio but needed a manufacturing partner to move from prototype to mass production. They engaged Flex’s Product Innovation Centre and design-for-manufacture expertise to get hands-on support with engineering, materials selection and supply-chain planning.

Flex applied its Sketch-to-Scale® approach at the Althofen site, working side-by-side with USound to refine the design, automate assembly (including nanolitre glue dispensing), and manage the bill of materials and inbound components. The collaboration led to first mass-produced units after November 2018, scaled output from 10,000 to 20,000 units per month and plans to exceed 500,000 units in 2019 and 1 million in 2020, enabling USound to deliver high-quality, high-volume products while focusing on R&D and market growth.
