A Fishbowl Inventory Case Study
NASA needed a robust asset-tracking system to manage more than 180 food items for long-duration space missions, where cold-chain challenges, spoilage risk, and precise quantities are critical. To solve this, NASA turned to Fishbowl Inventory, using its Manufacturing module (Fishbowl Manufacturing) to treat food and raw materials as tracked assets rather than typical saleable inventory.
Using Fishbowl Inventory’s asset-tracking features—barcodes, expiration-date tracking, and end-to-end tracing from raw materials through food production to the shuttle and ISS—NASA established automatic reorder points and monitored usage and spoilage trends. The Fishbowl Inventory implementation reduced waste and the risk of shortages or overstock, saved time and money in food logistics, and ensured astronauts receive properly tracked, nutritious supplies.
