University of Virginia’s IAM Transformation with Fischer Identity

The University of Virginia (UVA), a major R1 university and medical center, was struggling with an aging home-grown IAM system that lacked documentation, depended on retiring experts, and could not support real-time provisioning or cloud environments. These gaps created delays, inconsistent deprovisioning, duplicate identities, and costly in-person credentialing. UVA turned to Fischer Identity for identity and access management transformation.

Fischer Identity implemented a streamlined Identity Claim process, automated provisioning and deprovisioning with RBAC/ABAC/PBAC policies, synchronized credentials across UVA systems, and centralized external accounts to eliminate duplicates. The result was immediate automated access management, the end of in-person credentialing, a single unified password experience, and stronger security and compliance. Fischer Identity now manages over 180,000 active users and nearly 2 million identity accounts, and it smoothly supported UVA’s later transition to Workday HCM within weeks.
