How CUNA Stopped a Harmful IRS Provision and Grew its List by +200K

The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) is the largest national trade association representing credit unions at the state and federal levels. In 2021 CUNA confronted a proposed IRS provision in the Build Back Better Act that would have required depository institutions to report account inflows and outflows over $600, creating privacy concerns and heavy compliance burdens for credit unions.

Using its VoterVoice digital advocacy platform, CUNA launched a rapid, multi-channel campaign—emails, action alerts, and social posts—that mobilized members and partners. Advocates sent more than 850,000 messages to Congress, CUNA communications reached supporters with a 31.4% open rate, and the campaign added over 235,000 new supporters (97% new to CUNA); ultimately the IRS provision was removed from the final bill.
