wobe-systems GmbH develops software for the graphics and newspaper production industry, where huge TIFF files must be processed quickly across distributed Windows-based server environments. Its challenge was to support parallel handling of large image data while avoiding file system access conflicts and keeping production data and metadata available across multiple LAN segments.

To meet these needs, wobe-systems chose Firebird SQL, after using InterBase, as the core database for both metadata and binary BLOB storage. Firebird enabled fast, reliable storage and retrieval of large image files, transactional safety, and event notifications for client refreshes without constant polling. The result was a scalable, low-administration system that reliably supports time-critical industrial workflows, with production databases reaching 100 GB and more at customer sites.
