Moscow City Hospital - Customer Case Study

Moscow City Hospital #31, a 620-bed medical institution in Moscow, needed a more powerful medical information system to support analytical reporting and complex data processing. Its Oracle-based database handled basic entry and reporting, but it could not easily support the hospital’s denormalized data structures, transaction-based processing, and other advanced requirements, while also carrying significant licensing and support costs.

The hospital chose Firebird 2.1 to build a new analytical system in less than seven months. Firebird enabled the hospital to implement more than 400 tables and over 600 stored procedures and triggers, support around 100 concurrent users, and run reporting and OLAP processing without separate databases; the system now exceeds 1.5 GB and grows by about 50 MB per month. Firebird’s features and low-cost licensing helped reduce costs, improve flexibility, and support patient care and administration more effectively.
