A Firebird Case Study
Firebird worked with DQ Team (Nebuloasa SRL), a small software company behind the web-based turn-based strategy game “Delta Quadrant: Horizons.” The game was originally built as a small test project with nearly all logic in Firebird Procedural SQL, but the team needed to scale it for social networks and thousands of players without a major rewrite.
Firebird helped DQ Team upgrade from Firebird 2.1 to Firebird 2.5 and rewrite only a small part of the stored procedures to enable cross-database queries. The result was a scalable game engine that could support up to 10,000 players per galaxy and three galaxies per physical server, with 300 concurrent users per server, about 25% average CPU usage per core, and a database of roughly 1GB per galaxy serving more than 6,000 active players.
