Watermark Technologies develops document management solutions for businesses and needed a multi-user database system that was easy to install, low on resources, simple to maintain, and cost-effective for a competitive market. Its Volume document management system had to help customers store, search, and access large numbers of electronic documents efficiently without adding administration overhead.

Firebird was used as the database for Volume, providing easy configuration for an “install and forget” setup, fast searching on large databases, and simple tools for backup and minor administration. Firebird helped Watermark keep product costs down because it is open source, and the company reports that the system now supports average customer databases of around 15–20 GB, with some reaching up to 500 GB, and installs typically for about 10 users.
