P&A Consultants, the company behind XPertBilling, needed a telecom billing platform that could gather large volumes of usage data and generate complex invoices quickly, accurately, and reliably for MVNOs and other telecom providers. Their goal was to support billing for up to 400,000 customers per month while also making usage information available to end users through a web interface.

Using Firebird as the database engine inside XPertBilling, P&A Consultants delivered a fast, scalable, and easy-to-install billing solution that does not require a dedicated in-house DBA. Firebird’s performance, indexing, referential integrity, and multi-version concurrency helped the system stay stable as databases grew by more than 1 GB per month; in testing, XPertBilling calculated 500,000 invoices in an average of 64 milliseconds each, with production databases exceeding 70 GB.
