Onefootball increased users’ sessions by 5% by testing features before releasing them

Onefootball, a Berlin-based mobile football app serving millions of fans on iOS, Android and desktop, sought to boost news engagement with a new Top News section. They were concerned that putting curated news above the fold might increase article reads but reduce ad revenue if users stopped scrolling, so they needed to validate the feature before rolling it out.

Using Firebase Remote Config and Analytics, Onefootball ran a seven‑day A/B test (control, a rich UI variation, and a cleaner UI variation). Results showed the cleaner Top News layout performed best without hurting revenue: sessions per user rose 5%, articles read per user rose 6%, and high-quality content consumption increased 16%.
