Case Study: U.S. Coast Guard Operations Systems Center achieves real-time SOA integration with Fiorano Software

Built on Fiorano, US Coast Guard’s SOA platform "SPEAR" wins Federal 100 award

The U.S. Coast Guard Operations Systems Center needed an enterprise-wide service-oriented architecture to connect mission-critical systems and data sources across a large, complex federal environment. After an 18-month evaluation of more than a dozen alternatives, the Coast Guard selected Fiorano Software and its Fiorano SOA Platform / Fiorano ESB to support its “SPEAR” initiative.

Fiorano Software implemented the ESB as the backbone of the USCG SPEAR architecture, enabling event-driven, loosely coupled, asynchronous messaging, protocol mediation, routing, and security enforcement across dozens of business systems. The result was faster integration and deployment, including 11 prototype services built in two days and SPEAR documents completed in a day for key services, plus support for over 80 services and more than 50 connected business systems. The solution also improved real-time data sharing, helped the Coast Guard respond more effectively to incidents like the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and delivered cost savings through better inventory tracking and operational visibility.
