A Fathom Case Study
Arup, a global sustainable development consultancy, was challenged with addressing growing flood risk and urbanization in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Commissioned by the World Bank, Arup needed to assess if nature-based solutions could build climate resilience and reduce flooding. Arup teamed up with Fathom to use its rapid, bespoke flood modeling capabilities.
Fathom implemented its Global Flood Map to model flooding for various climate scenarios. They rapidly ran "what if" models to quantify the impact of urban greening interventions. The solution demonstrated that by 2030, up to 17,000 buildings could become less susceptible to flooding and the city could absorb an additional 730,000m used by the Government of Tanzania to inform World Bank projects and investment in climate resilience.
