Vimeo, the professional online video platform with over 35 million members and a monthly audience of 160 million, needed a way to store, update and deliver more than a billion dynamically generated thumbnails and other player assets quickly and securely. They required a CDN that integrated with Google Cloud, supported on-the-fly image resizing (Viewmaster), instant content purging, TLS termination at the edge, and the flexibility to push application logic to the edge while handling large, bursty traffic.

By using Fastly with Google Cloud Platform and Fastly’s Cloud Accelerator (built on a customized Varnish), Vimeo runs Viewmaster from Compute Engine and Google Cloud Storage with Origin Shield and edge logic, enabling instant purges and edge TLS. The result: real-time performance gains (up to 4x faster responses in some cases), a 73% cache hit rate, 6,800 requests/sec at the edge and 16 Gbps internal throughput, and a 50% latency reduction for mobile and APAC users—while giving Vimeo faster iteration and easier operational control.
