A Fastly Case Study
The Rust Foundation, a nonprofit supporting the Rust ecosystem, faced rapidly rising website and download traffic as Rust’s popularity surged, with bandwidth growing from 0.5 PB per month in 2021 to 2.5 PB by mid-2024 and projected to reach 4–5 PB in 2025. Its existing AWS-based setup was becoming costly and difficult to scale, pushing the organization to look for a more reliable and efficient infrastructure partner. Fastly helped the Rust Foundation through its Fast Forward initiative with free CDN and edge services.
Fastly implemented a CDN for Rust releases and crates, and used Fastly Compute for crates.io so the foundation’s developers could maintain critical CDN services more easily. The results were strong: Fastly became the primary CDN for all Rust assets, carrying 80% of the foundation’s traffic, while the site handled a 0.5 PB weekly bandwidth increase over six months with no downtime or performance degradation. Fastly also gave the Rust Foundation better visibility into traffic and performance, helping preserve time and budget for community programs.
